If you’re looking to add a new steering wheel to your E36 race car this hub will get you up and running. This is the perfect option to mount your OMP or Sparco steering wheel and will even work with the factory airbag.

First remove the single screw holding the lower column cover. Next disconnect the horn and airbag wiring.

Fits most Momo wheels, and also many Sparco and OMP steering wheels. Designed to collapse upon impact, this hub meets the highest safety standards and is the perfect way to add a performance upgrade to your car.

Please note: The installation of this type of wheel adapter necessitates removal of your airbag, and NGP Racing cannot advise customers about whether it is legal to do so in their country. We do not guarantee that the horn or any electrical features will work after this modification, and all customers do so at their own risk.

Momo is a world leader in aftermarket steering wheel accessories, offering a large selection of high quality wheels and components to fine tune the feel of your vehicle. Founded in 1964, Momo is dedicated to superior design and construction, safety, and performance.

The Momo hub kit design is unique in the industry. While most factory wheels have “break-away” outer rims that are designed to collapse in the event bmw e36 steering wheel hub of an accident, Momo wheels feature much stronger outer rims that will rarely collapse. The unique tower design of the Momo hub allows a “crush zone” similar to that of the front end of a car, dramatically increasing the safety level in case of an accident.

Designed to Collapse Upon Impact

The MOMO hub is designed to collapse upon impact, greatly reducing the risk of injury to the driver in the event of a crash. Most aftermarket steering wheels have outer hoops that break away under impact, but the MOMO hub set is engineered to deform and absorb the blow rather than breaking apart. This unique design greatly increases the safety of the car driver by absorbing the impact and creating a crumple zone similar to the front of the car, drastically reducing the chances of cranial/facial injury.

This hub works with all aftermarket Momo and Sparco steering wheels that have a 6 bolt, 70 mm PCD bolt hole pattern (an adapter is required for Nardi steering wheels). The hub kit comes complete with everything pictured including the short hub, horn button and hex key. This hub also includes a built in copper contact ring for the horn and a tab to cancel the turn signal. It is designed to work with all standard E36 horns and disconnects, but it is recommended that you use the included spacers to reduce the height of the hub for vehicles with low profile hex bosses.

Please note that replacing the steering wheel in cars equipped with airbags will disable both the driver’s airbag and any other airbags installed in the vehicle. This is a dangerous modification and should only be performed by experienced installers.

Easy to Install

If you read the instructions that come with it, this can be an easy project for a do-it-yourselfer. First, make sure the stock wheel is centered, then loosen the torx screw(s) holding the air bag, using a torx bit for safety. Then, if you still have the airbag on, deactivate it, disconnect (-) negative cable from battery.

Taking the black plastic “clock spring” (CS) assembly off is fairly easy with a little patience. It clips in at the top and at each side, and then can be removed with a wrench or gear puller.

Once the CS is removed, remove the 21mm nut that holds the steering wheel to the bride seat belt pad shaft. This is an interference fit, so rocking the wheel back and forth while pulling at the same time with both hands should get it off.

There is a hole in the base of the hub adapter that goes to the steering wheel – I used a 1/2” drill to create a clearance hole, then chamfered it slightly so the wire harness will go through it without rubbing on anything critical. It is important that you follow the directions on the clock spring connector on how to orient it, it has two tabs that must align with the horn wire harnes.

Then install the horn button and trim rings following manufactures instructions. To get the Momo wheel to sit strait, you may need to dremel off a dummy plastic plug positioned in the 7 o’clock position of the splines.
